Wine And Dine With A View Enjoy The Weather With Picnics, Walks And Fine Wine!
For many of us in the United States, spring has taken its time reaching us. The cruel fingers of winter have very slowly released their grip. Gentle warm breezes stir the foliage. With grapevines budding, birds singing and plants flowering, it is time to think of spending relaxing, free moments outdoors. Time spent outdoors is soothing for the soul. As Edward Fitzgerald said, “A book of verses underneath the bough, a jug of wine, a loaf of bread-and thou.”
Picnics, countryside walks or strenuous hikes can be relaxing, enjoyable and romantic with planning. A picnic can be a very spontaneous event as in a “pick up and go” style. Throw a few items in a bag and pick up a blanket on the way out the door. However, if you will be traveling any distance or over rough terrain, it is better to have a plan. Decide where you are going and discover the regulations regarding picnicking and beverages. Skyline Drive, in Shenandoah National Park, permits alcoholic beverages in many areas unless posted otherwise. Check the weather forecasts and make accommodations if necessary. Choose how to pack supplies, food and wine. There are many choices available whether baskets or picnic/wine carriers.
One item that many wine enthusiasts would enjoy is the wine backpack or the picnic backpack that will hold a wine bottle and wine glasses. Our preference for these types of items is to make sure they are lightweight especially if you are planning to walk far or hike uphill. There are a number of good backpacks and you will find one that meets your needs. If you decide to order online, do check out reviews on the item. It is always good to get someone else’s opinion. We prefer a backpack that has room for plates, utensils, cutting board, wine glasses, napkins, wine and food.
Things to consider when purchasing a good picnic/wine carrier include: size, weight, comfort, and cold storage. Backpacks often include place settings for two or four. Check to see if there is room for additional settings. Consider the weight of the picnic/wine carrier if you are hiking for an extended period. Carrying extra weight can tire you out quickly. Check to see if the straps on the picnic/wine carrier fit comfortably. Can you adjust the straps in case you need to wear a jacket? Will the picnic/wine carrier allow you to keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot?
In addition to picnic supplies, there are other items to carry. Think of packing sunscreen and mosquito repellent. Bottled water may be needed while hiking long distances, along rugged terrain, up elevations and down slopes. Take a camera so you can take memories back with you. Last spring and summer, we enjoyed lunch on a rock. In late April the trek to Marys Rock in Shenandoah National Park was difficult but worth it because it had an outstanding view. Only one other hiker was perched between rocks reading a book. We had our lunch on a rock and enjoyed the views. Our lunch was simple with two types of cheese, crackers and a Pinot Grigio. It was the perfect setting to watch birds flying below you, take photographs and feel a constant breeze. The scenery was breathtaking and the solitude was uplifting.
In August, we hiked up Maryland Heights at Harper’s Ferry National Park. It was a hot day and water breaks along the way helped us make it to the rocks for a spectacular view of the Potomac River and the town of Harper’s Ferry. We enjoyed crackers and cheese with a picnic red wine. There was plenty of room to find a rock and spread out. This area was busier than Marys Rock however there was plenty of room with unobstructed views.
Everyone has different ideas of where to walk, hike and picnic. Choose your favorite spot and enjoy.
Tip:
Our experience has been that picnic/wine backpacks and baskets sell out quickly. If you plan to purchase a basket or carrier for this summer, buy one soon.

Tailgating is Like a Picnic on Steroids. Things the First Time Tailgater Should Know
Tailgating may not be as difficult for the first time tailgater if they begin with the right attitude. If you look upon your tailgating experience as a picnic on steroids, a lot of what you already know about picnicking can be applied. Tailgating is gaining in popularity in a number of different sports and a wealth of information is available on the internet search engines and YouTube, and there have been several books written on the subject. If you do a search on “tailgating,” you will find a number of helpful websites that have their recommendations on how to make the most out of your tailgating experience. You should also contact the stadium and get a list of their rules and what time they open, which would be good to know before game-day.
It is good to have a checklist to go over while you are loading the car. Keep in mind that your own picnic supplies may be perfect for your newly found past time, so you may not need a large investment to get started unless that is your wish. A larger vehicle, pickup truck, van or SUV is preferable but if you have a smaller car there is no need to be discouraged. Just keep in mind that you will need to pack your grill and picnic supplies and whatever you need to stay comfortable at the event. There are tailgating cooler and portable grill combinations that are complete with a hand trolley. If you have a larger party you may wish to add a collapsible rolling cooler, which should be sufficient for your additional beverages. The advantage of having the mobile carriers is that it makes it easier to relocate your party to a friend’s site that may be in a more desirable location. Keep in mind that the parking locations are on a first-come first-serve basis. Since the lots open 3 to 5 hours before the game you will want to arrive early so you can get a good place. That also means that you will probably want to bring adequate outdoor furniture and cover from the elements. There are a number of sports chairs and non-reclining and reclining camp chairs available that fold up to where they don’t take up too much space when packing. You may also wish to include a waterproof blanket picnic tote, which serves as a way of dressing up your eating area, and also works well as a wrap to keep the wife dry and relatively happy if you get that unforeseen storm.
Once you arrive at the larger events you should find music, entertainment and a fairly festive atmosphere. You will find a variety of fun and interesting people, some of whom are very creative and innovative when it comes to setting up their space. Be sure to wear your team’s colors so you will fit in with the locals. You will be surprised how many doors will be opened to members of the same tailgating team.

Finding the Best Picnic Areas
Before I get into this I will point out that I do not have enough room to go into any environmental, plant or wildlife concerns that may be inherent in your particular area of inquiry. That will be the subject of a future article. If you have any questions about this please check with the local experts in your area, which you may be able to find in the search resources below.
The first thing I did was to break down my search as to whether our picnic party was going to be local to our area or, if we were looking for the perfect area to dine and relax while we were traveling away from home. In some cases it will be the same so let me point out the differences as I go forward. I personally give great value to the recommendations of my friends and family when I am doing research, and, in this case it was no different. I also use my favorite search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing. I go to their search window and type in “picnic areas, (town or county), (state),” press enter and then explore the results. The results window will show the first ten results of my search which are links to websites with information pertinent to my search. Then I just go down the list and click on the links that I am interested in. Included in the search results are city, county and state websites which often have some useful information. If I am not satisfied I will next, call the local Chamber of Commerce or Visitor Center and ask for their recommendations. They usually have more than enough information as to the best places to go. There are also a number of books which can be purchased at the local bookstore, sporting goods store or many of the places that cater to outdoor activities.
A good book or website on the hiking and biking trails in your area will reveal a variety of places that can be reached by a short hike or bike ride to a more secluded or picturesque area suitable for your picnic outing. There is much more available today for the backpacking picnic crowd than there was ten years ago. One can supply themselves with one of the backpacking cooler totes, which include separate food and beverage compartments, and broaden your choices of where to go for your picnic. Both this and the standard, uninsulated versions have been well received by hiking and biking enthusiasts and should be considered if you are planning more that a short walk from your car.
If you are on a trip out of your local area you may use many of the above methods to find the ideal location for your picnic party. If you do not have Internet access you may wish to talk to the same people listed above or use your GPS, which is good for finding parks and recreation areas. If you happen to be staying at a hotel you can often get information from the front desk or the concierge, if they have one.
Once you have narrowed down your choices of picnic locations, you will have to determine your own needs and wishes in order to finalize your selection. Here are some examples of questions you may ask yourself:
1. Is your picnic going to be a family affair with BBQ grilling, or is it a romantic excursion for two, with a nice, picnic wine basket?
2. Will you be biking or hiking to your final destination, or will you be parking close by your picnic area?
3. What will be your planned activities after you arrive?
4. Will you need to bring in your own BBQ grill or insulated tailgating cooler with charcoal or gas grill?
5. How about picnic tables? Will you need to bring in your own folding table with seats, an umbrella, fold-up outdoor furniture and blankets, or is this sufficiently provided at the site?
Figuring this all out is relatively easy to do and is best done before you leave home in order to minimize any unwanted surprises at your destination. This will be much more conducive to your being able to relax and enjoy yourself once you get to where you are going to have your party picnic.

Hampers.. when we hear or see the word hamper, it is usually associated with food. But are hampers just about food or are there other meanings associated with it?
